Awakening the Tribes of Africa

Restoring Identity. Renewing Covenant. Rebuilding Community.

Awakening the Tribes of Africa

Building together.

Awakening the Tribes of Africa is a movement dedicated to recovering African identity, history, heritage and spiritual understanding, and translating that recovery into purposeful living, responsible leadership and flourishing communities.

Founded by author and transformation practitioner Zvikomborero Kuwana, the movement grows from the questions explored in his book, Awakening the Tribes of Africa: Who are we? What has shaped our understanding of ourselves? What have we lost through conquest, colonialism and inherited religious systems? And what must we recover to fulfil our responsibilities to the Creator, one another and the land?

The movement invites Africans, on the continent and throughout the diaspora, to examine inherited narratives, search the Holy Scriptures, investigate historical evidence and reconnect with the knowledge and wisdom carried through their families, languages and communities. It encourages thoughtful enquiry, open dialogue and the courage to reconsider beliefs that disconnect people from their identity, dignity and purpose.

At its spiritual foundation is a call to return to the Most High Creator through covenant faithfulness: loving Him, understanding His instructions and accepting the responsibilities that accompany inheritance. It seeks to bring spiritual understanding into everyday conduct in relationships, family life, leadership, economic activity and stewardship of the land.

Ubuntu is central to its understanding of restoration: our humanity is expressed through our relationships and responsibilities to others. Across Africa’s diverse peoples and languages, this relational worldview offers a foundation for dignity, mutual care, collective responsibility and generational continuity. The movement seeks to strengthen these connections across national borders and throughout the African diaspora.

Its work centres on five interconnected commitments:

• Recover identity and historical understanding through research, storytelling, indigenous languages and intergenerational learning.
• Renew spiritual and covenant understanding through the study of Scripture, honest enquiry and practical obedience.
• Restore family and community relationships through Ubuntu, belonging and shared responsibility.
• Develop leaders rooted in identity and service through sacrificial leadership that protects people, builds trust and serves future generations.
• Translate awakening into action through education, gatherings, community initiatives and approaches to economic life that support collective wellbeing.
The vision is an Africa whose people know who they are, honour their inheritance, live responsibly before the Creator and work together to build communities in which present and future generations can flourish.
